This is one of the questions new store owners in LATAM ask me most often: which Shopify apps are absolutely essential? And my answer is always the same: it depends on your business model, but there's a core set of apps I install in practically every store I set up.
I've seen it in dozens of stores in LATAM: owners who install too many apps from the start end up with a slow, expensive, and hard-to-maintain store. Those who install too few leave money on the table. The key is knowing which ones are truly indispensable and which are optional depending on your stage.
In this article, I'm sharing my personal stack, organized by category, with the apps I use and recommend after working with dozens of Shopify stores in Mexico and LATAM.
Essential Shopify apps for any store
Before talking about specific apps, a principle I always follow: fewer apps, better configured. Every app you install adds code to your store, can slow it down, and has a monthly cost. Only install what you're actually going to use.
That said, these are the categories where you absolutely need coverage from day one:
- Product reviews
- Email marketing and abandoned cart recovery
- Basic SEO
- Customer support and chat
- Translation (if you sell in more than one language)
- Advanced reports and analytics
Review apps: build trust from day one
63% of customers check reviews before buying. Without reviews, your store loses credibility compared to competitors who do have them.
My recommendation: Judge.me Product Reviews
- Very comprehensive free plan
- Sends automatic emails requesting post-purchase reviews
- Supports photos and videos in reviews
- Integrates with Google Shopping to display stars in search results
- Imports reviews from AliExpress, Amazon, and WooCommerce
It's the review app I use most in my projects. Unbeatable value for money.
Email marketing apps: recover carts and build customer loyalty
Email remains the channel with the best ROI in e-commerce. And on Shopify, you have two solid options depending on your stage:
For new stores or those with a tight budget: Shopify Email
- Included in all Shopify plans
- Easy to use, natively integrated
- Ideal for newsletters and basic campaigns
- First 10,000 emails per month are free
For stores with volume or those wanting advanced automation: Klaviyo
- Advanced segmentation based on behavior
- Automated flows: abandoned cart, welcome, win-back, post-purchase
- Native A/B testing
- Deep integration with Shopify
Klaviyo is my favorite tool for stores that already have traffic and want to maximize every visit. I've seen it in dozens of stores in LATAM: implementing basic Klaviyo flows can recover between 10% and 20% of abandoned carts.

SEO apps: rank on Google without relying solely on advertising
Shopify already includes basic SEO features, but there are areas where a specialized app makes a difference.
My recommendation: Plug In SEO or Avada SEO
- Automatic SEO issue audit
- Bulk optimization of meta titles and descriptions
- Automatic generation of structured data (schema markup)
- Detection of broken links and error pages
For stores in Mexico and LATAM, Spanish SEO is a huge opportunity that many competitors aren't taking advantage of. A well-optimized store can generate constant organic traffic without paying for advertising.
Shopify has official documentation on SEO at help.shopify.com that complements the use of these apps very well.
Support and chat apps: turn questions into sales
70% of chat conversations occur with customers who are about to buy. If you're not available to answer those questions, you lose sales.
My recommendation: Shopify Inbox
- 100% free, developed by Shopify
- Real-time chat from the Shopify admin or mobile app
- Automatic replies for frequently asked questions
- Shows the products the customer has in their cart while you chat
- Integrates with Instagram and Facebook Messenger
For most stores in LATAM, Shopify Inbox is sufficient. If you have a large support team, then it's worth evaluating Gorgias or Tidio.

Optional but highly recommended apps depending on your model
These are not mandatory for everyone, but they are for certain types of stores:
If you do dropshipping:
- DSers — order management with AliExpress, free up to a certain volume
- AutoDS — advanced dropshipping automation
If you do print-on-demand:
- Printify or Printful — automatic production and shipping of custom products
If you sell in multiple languages:
- Translate & Adapt (from Shopify, free) — native translation integrated with Markets
If you need advanced reports:
- Matrixify — bulk data import and export, essential for large stores
- Lifetimely — LTV, cohorts, and profitability by channel
If you want to increase average order value:
- Shopify Bundles (free, from Shopify) — easily create product bundles
- ReConvert — upsells and cross-sells on the order confirmation page
Conclusion: the Shopify apps you absolutely need
If I had to summarize it in a minimum viable stack for any Shopify store in LATAM, it would be this:
- ✅ Judge.me — reviews
- ✅ Shopify Email or Klaviyo — email marketing
- ✅ Plug In SEO or Avada SEO — search engine optimization
- ✅ Shopify Inbox — chat and support
- ✅ Shopify Flow (included in Advanced+ plans) — automations
With these well-configured essential Shopify apps, you have a solid foundation for growth. The rest you add according to the real needs of your business, not because of a trend or because someone on YouTube recommended it.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify apps
How many apps should I install on my Shopify store?
As few as possible. My recommendation is to start with 4 to 6 essential apps and add more only when you have a specific need that you can't solve otherwise. Each app adds weight to your store and a monthly cost that accumulates.
Do Shopify apps slow down my store?
Yes, if you don't choose them carefully. Some apps inject a lot of JavaScript code that affects loading speed. Always check the speed impact after installing a new app using Google PageSpeed Insights or Shopify's speed report.
Are there free apps that actually work?
Yes. Judge.me, Shopify Inbox, Shopify Email, Translate & Adapt, and Shopify Bundles are free (or have very comprehensive free plans) and I use them in real projects. You don't need to spend money on apps from day one.
Is Klaviyo worth it for small stores in Mexico?
Only if you already have consistent traffic. If you're just starting, Shopify Email is sufficient. Klaviyo makes sense when you have at least 500 active subscribers and want to automate recovery and loyalty flows.
Do I need an additional payment app in Mexico?
It depends on your gateway. If you use Shopify Payments (available in Mexico), you don't need anything extra. If you use Conekta, Clip, Mercado Pago, or other local options, each has its own app or integration that you must configure correctly.
